Alberto Jona

Director, musician and musicologist, with an eclectic educational background spanning dance-theater, voice, musicology and drama. Alberto Jona began his theatrical training at a very young age with contemporary dance and dance-theater, pursuing studies in Italy, Great Britain and France. He then dedicated himself to singing, studying voice with Gabriella Ravazzi and Anne English Santucci, and specializing in the chamber repertoire with Dalton Baldwin, Gerard Souzay and Erik Werba. He has performed as a singer in Italy, France, Spain, Great Britain, Romania, the United States and South America.

 

He co-founded the Controluce Teatro d'Ombre Company alongside Corallina De Maria and Jenaro Meléndrez Chas, with whom he has staged shows at major festivals and theaters in Europe, Asia, North Africa and America, collaborating with musicians, conductors, directors and artists such as Kate Bush, Vinicio Capossela, Mario Brunello, Jordi Savall, Kenneth Weiss, Fabio Biondi and Davide Livermore.

 

In 2013, Alberto Jona turned to opera direction. He has since directed and staged productions in Germany, Switzerland, Spain and Italy, including Bellini's Il Pirata and La Straniera at the Niederbayern Landestheater in Passau, Germany; El Jardin de la vida by José Maria Sanchez Verdù, 900 Musica, Lugano, Switzerland, and Semana de Musica Religiosa de Cuenca, Spain; Lo stridere luttuoso degli acciai by Adriano Guarnieri, TPE Torino; Donna di Veleni by Marco Podda, Teatro Coccia Novara; I viaggi di Gulliver by Bruno Moretti, Teatro Coccia di Novara; Il sogno del signor Rodari by Nuria Nunez Hierro, Accademia di Spagna Rome. In addition, he has directed operas such as Federico Gon’s Un Bullo in maschera at the Coccia Theater in Novara and at the Teatro Lirico Verdi in Trieste, Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the Coccia Theater in Novara, and Verdi’s Nabucco at the Sordevolo Arena in Biella. In parallel, he has overseen with Controluce Teatro d'Ombre the visual imaging for The Diary of Anne Frank by Grigorij Frid at the Teatro Regio in Turin and for Les Contes d'Hoffmann by Offenbach at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

Current and upcoming projects include the reprise, with Controluce Teatro d'Ombre, of The Diary of Anne Frank by Grigorij Frid at the Teatro Regio in Turin, La Pazzia di Orlando for the Teatro Stabile d'Abruzzo and the Teatro Stabile di Torino, the staging of Handel's Israel in Egypt for the Turin Baroque Music Festival and the direction of Verdi's Aida at the Sordevolo Arena in Biella and the Coccia Theater in Novara, 

        Alberto Jona has also collaborated in directorial/educational projects with the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana and Luisa Castellani on three productions of Baroque and Contemporary Music.

He holds a degree in Musical Aesthetics from the University of Turin, and has published essays and studies on Mozart's theater and on early 20th-century musical theater. As both a performer and scholar of Jewish music and culture, he edited the Italian edition of the History of Jewish Music by Abraham Zvi Idelsohn for La Giuntina, Florence. 

He teaches History of Musical Theater and Musical Dramaturgy at the Conservatorio Giorgio Ghedini in Cuneo, and Fundamentals of Musical Communication at the Università Cattoòica del Sacro Cuore in Milan. 

He co-founded the Scuola Holden in Turin together with the writer Alessandro Baricco, and is the Artistic Director of Incanti International Puppetry Festival of Turin.
