After that he performed Scarpia in Tosca in Rome, Venice, Paris, Palermo, Bari, Tokyo, Copenhagen, Savolinna, Tel Aviv, Leipzig, and Hong Kong, baritone Sebastian Catana adds a new Puccini role to his repertoire, Michele in Tabarro, for a unique performance at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma on April 18 2023 (8 p.m.). The new production in Rome places Puccini’s masterpiece beside to Béla Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle for a triennial project called Trittico ricomposto born in collaboration with the Puccini Festival of Torre del Lago on the occasion of the composer’s centenary. On the podium Maestro Michele Mariotti,
also making his debut in the title role. The production is directed by Johannes Erath, sets by Katrin Connan, costumes by Noëlle Blancpain, videos by Bibi Abel and lighting design by Alessandro Carletti. Beside Catana a prestigious company: Maria Agresta (Giorgetta), Gregory Kunde (Luigi), Enkelejda Shkoza (La Frugola), Didier Pieri (Il Tinca) and
Roberto Lorenzi (The Mole). “I am thrilled to perform the role of Michele for the first time, a character who has a surprising psychological development. He is a character who is frequently misunderstood and marked as a villain, while he is only a suffering man, deeply hurted by the drama of a vanished fatherhood and the relationship with his wife, but also with the world around him. He is a murderer, but I believe that when the curtain closes he understands that his pain cannot be extinguished by a bloody vengeance. He is a man eternally doomed to unhappiness. The Romanian baritone has a deep relationship with the roman audience that applauded him in some of his most significant characters (Scarpia, Giorgio Germont in La Traviata and the title-roles of Rigoletto and Nabucco for the summer season at the Terme di Caracalla in 2016).
After this Tabarro, Catana will return to the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv to reprise the role of Conte di Luna in Il Trovatore.
