Elena Moșuc makes her debut at the Opéra Royale de Wallonie in Liège, where she will play the title role in Francesco Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur for the first time. The performances in which the Romanian-Swiss Diva will embody the great Comédie-Française actress will be on April 11, 14, 16, 18, 2023. On the podium of the Liège Opera Orchestra Maestro Christopher Franklin, while the production is signed by the French director Arnaud Bernard, who will signs the sets with Virgile Koering, while the costumes will be by Carla Ricotti. Beside Elena Moșuc, Luciano Ganci as Maurizio, Mario Cassi (Michonnet), Anna Maria Chiuri (Principessa di Bouillon), Mattia Denti and Luca Pierre Dereht in the roles of Principe di Bouillon and l’Abate di Chazeuil. The opera, a new production, returns to the Belgian city after hirty-three years (the last time was in 1990). Francesco Cilea was fascinated by Eugène Scribe and Ernest Legouvé’s theatrical transposition of the tormented vicissitudes of the diva of the late 18th century French theatre, Adrienne Lecouvreur, and brought to triumph by the performance of the legendary Sarah Bernhardt, and he created a melodrama with fascinating melodic glimpses and an irresistible dramatic force. Since its triumphant premiere in 1902 at the Teatro Lirico in Milan (thanks to the extraordinary performances of the two main performers, Angelica Pandolfini and Enrico Caruso), this title has become a fetish in the catalogue of all primadonnas that wishes to challenge themselves with this monumental character, the embodiment of the artist and her deepest philosophical values. Elena Moșuc comes to this character after a career devoted in a to Mozart, the Belcanto of Donizetti and Bellini, French opera and the Verdi repertoire (from Gilda to the recent Leonora del Trovatore at the Zurich Opernhaus), performing also Puccini’s La Bohème and La Rondine. “Being Adriana is a challenge for me, as it is for all artists who wish to approach this extraordinary creature. I used the verb ‘to be’ because it is not enough to sing Adriana, one must believe in emotions and give ourselves to it, but dominating them and seeking theatrical truth through them. It is a role that requires a lot of physical and psychological energy. You really have to be a singing actress. I studied every detail to fully understand every moment and every throb of her soul. I have been reading about the historical aspects of Adrienne’s life and also on the revolutionary aspect of her artistic activity, with the introduction of a proper ‘spoken theatre’.” The singer is also doubly excited about her debut at the Opéra Royale de Wallonie. In Belgium, Moșuc has already been acclaimed at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels as Lucia di Lammermoor and Lucrezia Borgia: “I am very happy to return to Belgium, a wonderful country, and to meet for the first time the wonderful audience of Liège.
